Palm Beach Dolphin Project (PBDP)

Prompted by rising concerns about the population and health status of whales and dolphins in Florida, Palm Beach County has, for the very first time, become the focus of a long-term effort to assess the conservation status of these animals and associated ecosystems.

Operating under the authority of a Letter of Confirmation (LOC) from the National Marine Fisheries Service Office of Protected Resources (GA #1063-1716), we are currently focusing on the natural history of bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, but include other species in our research as the opportunity presents itself. Our short-term goal is to obtain critical baseline data of the dolphins and their habitat, and to create a photo-ID catalogue of all individual dolphins.
